Who We Are
Newquay Zoo is Cornwall’s largest zoo, set within 13 acres of lush, sub‑tropical gardens in the heart of Trenance Leisure Park. Home to hundreds of animals including many Critically Endangered species, the zoo has welcomed visitors since 1969 and continues to inspire curiosity, learning and a deeper connection to wildlife.

From a small local zoo to a South West favourite
Our roots stretch back to the 1950s, when Newquay Children’s Zoo first delighted visitors in Trenance Gardens. We moved to our current site and officially opened on 26 May 1969, beginning a journey that continues to evolve today.
A place that keeps growing
After years as a council‑run attraction, the zoo entered private ownership in 1994, then joined the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust (later Wild Planet Trust) in 2003, strengthening our conservation and education work alongside our sister site, Paignton Zoo.

A new chapter
In December 2025, Dutch leisure company Libéma acquired Newquay Zoo and Paignton Zoo, announcing plans to invest £10 million over two years. The zoo has been operated by Libéma since January 2026, marking an exciting phase of development for habitats and visitor experience.

High standards, shared globally
We are proud members of BIAZA, EAZA, and WAZA, working within international zoo communities to uphold excellent animal care, contribute to breeding programmes, and share best practice.
Learning that sticks
We work closely with local education providers including a long‑standing partnership that led to an on‑site facility now operated by Cornwall College, to deliver courses and hands‑on experiences that nurture the next generation of conservationists.
