Investing in the future of Newquay Zoo

We’re enhancing the zoo with new enclosures, species, and visitor attractions. As these improvements take shape, you may notice some development work during your visit.

What to expect when you visit

While improvements are underway, there may be a few temporary changes around the zoo. We’re committed to keeping disruption to a minimum so you can still enjoy your day.

  • Some areas may be temporarily closed or partially visible

  • Occasional noise from construction work

  • Clearly signposted alternative routes where needed

  • Our teams are on hand to help throughout your visit

Coming soon...

A new Savannah experience

One of the first major developments is a brand-new Savannah route, designed to guide visitors through a more immersive landscape with improved views and closer animal encounters.

Along this new route, you’ll discover new spaces for:

  • Meerkats

  • Porcupines

  • Turaco

  • Caracal

This new area is designed to create a sense of journeying through the environment rather than simply observing it. You will still see your old favourites, Chapman's zebra and black wildebeest in the existing Savannah area, but from a whole new angle!

Madagascan Walkthrough

Work is also underway on an exciting new Madagascar-themed experience, currently taking shape behind the scenes.

Plans include:

  • A walkthrough habitat with free-roaming lemurs

  • A dedicated nocturnal environment inspired by Madagascar after dark

This new area will bring a completely different atmosphere to the zoo, showcasing the island’s unique wildlife in immersive surroundings.

A future home for the aye-aye

One of the most exciting future arrivals is the aye-aye, a rare and fascinating primate.

Aye-ayes are among the most unusual and elusive animals found in zoos, with only a small number held in collections across the UK and worldwide.

Currently at Paignton Zoo, our sister site, visitors will soon be able to see this remarkable species right here in Cornwall.

The aye-aye will play a key role in bringing the Madagascar experience to life, offering visitors the chance to discover one of the world’s most unique nocturnal primates up close.

Looking Ahead: Future Plans

Development doesn’t stop here. Planning is already underway for the next phase of the Savannah area, including early designs for a future giraffe habitat.

These plans form part of a long-term vision to continue improving the zoo and expanding the range of species and experiences on offer.
